Luke and McMurphy: A Comparison

In comparing Luke and McMurphy, you find that the only way for their stories to end would be to end their lives. In both cases they were killed by other people, they were both "killed" by the person they were opposing, someone of authority. In some ways this could be viewed as the ultimate defeat, but to the other prisoners, this was a victory. The goal of the prison authority is to make the prisoners better people, so that they will not commit any more crimes if they are releases; they try to teach the prisoners a lesson. However, they failed when it came to Luke. The only way for them to stop Luke was to kill him. This was a rare moment when the authority shows weakness. This concept can also be applied to McMurphy's case. The only way the Nurse could stop McMurphy was to give him a lobotomy, an attempt to "fix" him. Although the Chief was the one that physically killed McMurphy, the Nurse killed him mentally. In the Chief's eyes, he was doing McMurphy a favor and saving him from a miserable life in the hospital. Both characters have been referred to as Christ-like and I agree. They are not Christ-like in their morals and values. In McMurphy's case he was a savior for the other patients on the ward, and Luke was the savior for the other men in the prison. They were not only saviors for the men around them, they died for them as well.

Cukoos Nest

This book started off very confusing but after getting more into the book you realize what is going on. That mental institute kind of scared me. The things they did to the patients and how they treated them was unfair. I find it pretty crazy that he was able to write this book while on drugs. It enhances the all around plot of the book. When you think about it, if McMurpy did not come the institute you have think about how some of those men would have never gotten out. McMurpy opened the doors of the men to come out of the hidden personality. He gave them an opportunity and voice. I believed for the most part they did well with it. When they voted for the baseball game and for the basketball team. They went from scared people to more confident. McMurpy added life in the book, he taught the men more about life then I think the nurse was. Who do you think was the most important character in the book?

Cool Hand Luke

While watching cool hand Luke you realized how much of a determined man he was. He thought for himself but also acted for himself. He would not let any man get in his way. He changes the atmosphere of the ward. He knew when to give a good time. The men were a lot livelier when he was there. He never turned away from a challenge. When he ate all those eggs he could have just given up but he had faith in himself and some of the other did to. He always took the opportunity to work really hard so that they got their job done faster and they could relax a longer time. He was smart in a way and knew a since of timing. All of the time Luke ran ways he ran as hard and as far as he could. A couple times I thought he would have had it to freedom but always found himself back there. He was a smart man that used that to his advantage and in the end making the head guy so mad and threaten by him he killed him. I wish the movie did not end that way. But you can’t always have a happy ending.

Allergies

The real challenge all started in six grade when I found out I was lactose intolerant. When I was a baby I was also lactose intolerant but it did not affect me as much. I just had different formulas. But in six grade my favorite thing to have was ice cream form the dairy queen. After eating this kind of food I always got sick. But being that age I was confuse about what was going on. I never heard for food allergies. So I let it go on of about a whole summer before telling my mom what was going on. Finally when I told my mom she told me to tell her next time it happened. Well the next day I went to the dairy queen and got sick. So for a whole week I did not eat dairy nothing happened my stomach was doing great. After doctor the doctor confirmed it, I went of dairy completely. Been like that ever since. Ever since then I have found alternatives to that kind of food. It took a while to weed out the stuff I did not like but I did. In these six year I have only had one slip up and that was when a doctor prosrbed me was meds that had lactose in it. Safe to say that made me even sicker. Worst couple days that my stomach encountered.

When I entered in to high school my stomach started to bother me. Every day for I would get up not feeling well I continue through the day like that. There were only a couple days were I did not feel that pain. Those were the best days. But over time I learned to deal with all the pain and push past it. But it got so bad that it kept me from hanging out, going to play sports. All I did was stay home in pain. Over those last three years I had gone to the doctors so much that I was use to going four times a month. I ended up going to three doctors over the past three years. Then final my parents got really desperate because I would go a week at a time only eating bread and water. Finally mom my way talking to this girl’s mom in her class and she recommended this doctor. So I went and described what I felt. The doctor took four tubes of blood to test me with. The test came back as I was allergic to all types of yeast, gluten and eggs. So I went off those types of food. Ever since then my stomach has been normal. I have my bad days but I can enjoy life and worry less about my health. It was a weight lifted off my shoulders. My life has dramatically taken a turn for the best and I owe it all to this one lady, the doctor and my parents. Bu tit has its challenges that I am restrict in food chooses. But my one big thing that bothers me is gone people say I am sorry. I am not sorry for myself.

If had to be allergic to one thing what food would it be to??

Times Square

Advertising. You see it everywhere, in your home town, at your favorite restaurant, driving on the highway, basically there’s no end to it. For example Times Square in New York City is filled with random eye catchers which probably cost millions for the companies. Companies will go out of their way to make sure they get your attention, they could add colors or electronics and of course they make their signs BIG. Not like the posters you see at school telling you to donate blood or the signs people hold up to get your attention for a car wash. I mean businesses really go big or go home, and of course sometimes it gets annoying but how much you wanna bet they get more and more sales due to their billboard in Time Square. I know the price for that billboard probably paid off. But how much do you think their gaining?

Supersize Me...Not.

Supersize me, not only a movie but a documentary that changed many people views the once friendly Ronald McDonald. This documentary was filmed in 2004 starring Morgan Spurlock. The experiment was to see what would happen if Spurlock ate McDonalds for 30 days straight: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The rules, simply…or so you think: He must eat only the products from McDonalds, he must “Super Size” any meal if asked upon, he cannot work out, he must sample every item on the McDonalds menu, and he can only walked 5,000 steps a day because that’s about the average of a typical American. Before starting the study Spurlock goes to see not one but three doctors to make sure he is in good enough shape to even start this experiment. Even while taping he has a nutritionist and a personal trainner. During the film you see Spurlock throw up, gain weight, go through depression, headaches, etc. Overall this study was done because 2 girls were trying to sue McDonalds for them gaining weight and being unhealthy. Also some very interesting fact learned while watching this movie are: 60 percent of all Americans are either overweight or obese, One in every three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime, McDonald's operates more than 30,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries on 6 continents, etc. This film has taught Americans a lot of information that was unknown to us before also I know many people who have stopped eating fast food all together after this movie which means Spurlock’s point was made.

Advertising

Throughout the years there has been more and more advertising happening. I remember when I was younger the time commercials ran was half of what it is now. The shows are shorter now because of commercials. In some cases the actual show is shorter than all the commercials. I find that very annoying. We are surrounded by advertisements. When you drive down the streets and highways you see ads. All of these ads have pictures and sangs so it catches the attention. While some work where others don't. All of these ads are created because there are so many products competing to be the best. When I was younger there were not all these types of brands. Today when you walk in the grocery store you see how many shampoos, types of cheese and many more products. All of these companies believe they have a better product all they have to do is make it know and they are in the game. What kind of advertisement do you think catches the most people’s attention?

Barbie: A Doll or A Role Model?

A lot of the articles we've been reading in class have to do with the image that Barbie promotes and how she has become a bad role model for the young girls that play with her. There is one question I have regarding these articles: who decided that dolls were role models for young girls? I see Barbie as a way to play out the imagination of children. Almost every child likes to pretend and imagine what it would be like to be an adult in the world. They "play pretend" and "make believe" that they are older. Playing "dress-up" is putting on the clothes in your mother's closet and acting like a woman, instead of a girl. Playing "mommy" is taking a doll and pretending it is your baby. They even sell baby dolls to young girls that do almost everything a baby does so "playing mommy" is more realistic. Barbie is a way to play out the life of a grown-up. Barbie can be anything you want her to be. She can be a doctor one day, and a teacher the next. I don't want to speak for every girl, but I never once looked at Barbie and thought, "I want to look just like this doll." The only thing I every thought about when I was playing with Barbie is, "what will Barbie do today, and what outfit is she going to wear." I think Barbie is more about playing out the imagination of young girls, and less about how her appearance is setting a standard for young girls.

Mean Girls

While watching mean girls you enjoy the humor of all the things the girls do to each other to be popular or liked. The plastics, the popular girl in school, use their looks and their money to get what they want. They don't care how they treat people and who they will hurt along the way. They Say they are friends but they trash each other behind their backs. These three girls are the icons of girl world. When Kadi comes to school she pretends to like them at first but only finds herself turning into one of them by disobeying her parents and hurting her real friends.

In middle school is where it all starts for most girls. The girls have this notion that they have to get in the popular group. The popular group in middle school is the girls that wear the cute clothes and that every boy thinks is cute. All of the girls will try to wear and act like those girls, losing their personalities on the way. But those popular girls always made fun of the ones that were not wearing the cute clothes or ones who were inferior to them. This all just starts drama and causes girls to be mean to each other. People wonder why more girls today are having eating disorders is because of society, but mostly it is the girl world. The pressure we feel from the other girl we go to school with. As middle school progresses these girl problems really never really changed.

When high school hits there not so much as the same drama as in middle school but there’s drama. When you enter high school you get a new crowd new people. Everything that happened in middle school is forgotten for most. The drama now is about boys and if you fit in the right place. Everybody in high school is trying to find what they like to do and how they want to spend their time. So you end up switching groups and people get mad because you just ditched hanging out with them but it is not really that big of a deal. There is a reason for your life to go that way. It may be because though people are more like you or you just want to make new friends somewhere else. But in the end always causes people to talk about you. But the biggest thing people talk about or cause drama for boys and girls dating, liking each other and hanging out. It seems to be a competition for who can get the most guys and what guys like you or who you are dating. This is the biggest thing that causes fights and friend ships to end. Girls will talk about how you look with the guy or how you don’t deserve him. The factor of jealousy plays a huge part in this problem and the only way girls deal with it is trash the girl.

People say mean girls is just a movie well it is based off of the girl world . Every girl goes through it. There is no way to avoid it.

'Our Barbies, Ourselves'

In the article "Our Barbies, Ourselves" by Emily Prager, Prager discusses the creation and impact of the Barbie doll. She starts off by saying that the Barbie doll was designed by a man and, calls attention to many controversies caused by the way the doll looks. Prager says in the article "..her breasts are so out of proportion to the rest of her body that if she were a human woman, she'd fall flat on her face." She goes on to say that besides the look of her body, "...Barbie, in feminist terms, is definately her own person...a liberated woman, a gal on the move." This raises an interesting question, why would a doll be designed to fit the male fantasy, but have the lifestyle that would be accepted by the feminist ideas? Barbie is famous for her out of proportion body and endless resume (she can go from flight attendent to doctor in one outfit change), but how many unrealistic expectations can you set for an impressionable young girl?
